Controlling Insect-Borne and Organism-Borne Diseases
There are several diseases that are transmitted by insects or other organisms in Trinidad and Tobago that are potentially hazardous to the health of citizens. You have been diagnosed with dengue fever, malaria, yellow fever, West Nile virus, hairy-moth infestation or any other insect or organism-borne disease. The Insect Vector Control Unit will visit your area to assess the situation and will carry out appropriate measures to control the insect or organism vectors, if necessary.

The Dental Services Division of the Ministry of Health provides quality oral health care (with the emphasis on prevention) to ensure the maintenance of good oral health. If you are 18 years of age or under, most preventive and restorative services are provided free of charge. When you visit a health clinic, you will be asked to fill out a form with your name, address, date of birth, periodontal medical history and, in the case of children, consent forms must be signed by a parent or guardian.

Pregnant women must receive special medical care and attention to ensure safe carriage and delivery of their babies. The Ministry of Health provides antenatal healthcare to all pregnant women, free of cost. Antenatal care is available at all of the nation's health facilities with the exception of the St. Ann's Hospital.

Pharmaceutical Grant
The Pharmaceutical Grant is provided for the purchase of prescriptive drugs only if unavailable at the Government Dispensary (Health Centre) or through the Chronic Disease Assistance Programme (CDAP). The grant is designed to assist chronically ill persons who are clients of the Ministry of the People and Social Development, or persons in dire need of assistance to purchase their prescribed medication. Persons who are already clients of the Ministry of the People and Social Development must approach their respective officer to make a request for assistance.
Medical Equipment Grant
The Medical Equipment grant is provided to assist needy persons in the purchase of medical aids such as hearing aids, wheelchairs, prosthetics, eyeglasses, colostomy bags, etc. The maximum amount of the grant is TT$7,500.00. Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation
The Piparo Empowerment Centre provides long-term residential treatment, rehabilitation and skills training for male substance abusers in Trinidad and Tobago, based on the Therapeutic Community Model. Immunization
The Ministry of Health provides immunization services at no charge to citizens of Trinidad and Tobago through the Extended Programme on Immunization. Vaccinations are done by appointment at all Health Centres on days scheduled for immunization. Outpatient treatment can include medication, psychotherapy and rehabilitation, and is administered at health centres that offer mental health care while the patient continues to live at home in his or her community.

Donating Blood
Our health system relies on a continuous supply of blood from volunteer donors, and there is often a shortage. Blood can be donated by anyone meeting the criteria listed in the “Health criteria for donating blood” section below. The National Blood Transfusion Service also has a mobile unit that selects business places (that have at least 20 willing possible donors) to visit for the purpose of collecting blood from voluntary donors.

Respiratory diseases are a leading cause of illness and death in Trinidad and Tobago. The Respiratory Disease Programme seeks to decrease the rate of infection and reduce the number of illnesses and deaths from respiratory diseases by focusing on prevention and treatment.
