Safety of road haulage
Lorry drivers face safety risks at rest areas and in tunnels. The government is therefore taking measures to enhance safety in these places.
Requirements for lorries
Lorries have to comply with various rules. They must for example have mirrors which ensure the driver does not have a blind spot, and a tachograph to record driving times and rest periods.
Rail freight transport
Some 80% of rail freight in the Netherlands comes from or is destined for other countries. The Dutch government therefore works with other European governments to create good international rail links.
Safety of rail freight transport
Freight transport by rail has to be safe as well as fast. The government has designated rail routes for the transport of dangerous goods, for example.
Working safely in the maritime sector
Safe maritime transport is important for passengers and crew, residents of coastal and port areas, the environment and the economy. The government is therefore making international agreements on safety at sea and it is ensuring that good maritime education and training is available.
