Housing market
There are more than seven million homes in the Netherlands. The government carries out several surveys of the housing market every year to determine what kind of homes are needed, how many and where. The government also decides whether older dwellings can be renovated so that more homes are available.
Housing associations
Many dwellings in the Netherlands are owned by housing associations. These are organisations that let or sell accommodation and provide homes for older people and people with a disability.
Rented housing
Both social and private (non-subsidised) housing can be rented in the Netherlands. Rules apply to both the tenant and the landlord. They cover security of tenure, rent, rent increases, maintenance, service charges, etc. Social housing tenants on low incomes are entitled to housing benefit if their rent is relatively high.
