Applying for a benefit
You can apply for most benefits online. In most cases you’ll need to meet with a case manager before your application is accepted and you start being paid.
What you have to do when you're getting a benefit
If you're getting a benefit, NZ Superannuation or a Veteran's Pension from Work and Income, you must let them know if your contact details or circumstances change.
What counts as income for benefits
When you apply to Work and Income for a benefit or allowance, and while you're receiving it, you need to tell them if you get other income — either regular payments or a one-off.
Advance Payment of Benefit
Work and Income can advance up to 6 weeks’ benefit or pension to help pay for essential costs that crop up. Anyone on a low income, who gets a benefit or pension from Work and Income, can apply. It’s repaid in instalments.
Emergency Benefit
If you can't support yourself and you're not able to get any other help from Work and Income, you can apply for the Emergency Benefit.
Recoverable Assistance Payment
A Recoverable Assistance Payment can help with urgent costs that you can’t afford. Anyone on a low income who isn’t receiving a benefit or pension from Work and Income can apply.
Special Needs Grant
A Special Needs Grant from Work and Income can help you cover essential or emergency costs that you can't afford. Anyone on a low income can apply and you don’t usually have to repay it.
Temporary Additional Support
If you can't pay for what you need you can apply to Work and Income for Temporary Additional Support. This is a weekly payment that can last for up to 13 weeks and you don't have to be on a benefit.
Getting NZ Superannuation or the Veteran's Pension
NZ Superannuation is a universal payment for NZ citizens and residents who are 65 or older. If you've served in New Zealand's Armed Forces you might be able to apply for a Veteran’s Pension instead.
Applying from the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau
If you've lived in NZ for 10 years or more, and now live in the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau, you may be able to get NZ Superannuation or the Veteran's Pension when you turn 65.
Veteran's Pension
If you've served in NZ's Armed Forces during a war or a recognised emergency, you can apply for a Veteran’s Pension. In some cases your spouse or partner may also qualify for one.
Your partner and NZ Superannuation
How much NZ Superannuation you get paid depends on whether you have a partner and your living arrangements.
NZ Super if you live alone
You'll get a higher amount of NZ Superannuation or Veteran's Pension if you're single and live by yourself. This takes into account the extra costs of running a household on your own.
If you lived or worked overseas
If you lived or worked in another country you may be able to get their social security pension. When you apply for NZ Superannuation or the Veteran's Pension, apply for these pensions at the same time.
NZ Super payment dates
NZ Super payments are made every second Tuesday. If there's a public holiday, payments are made earlier.
If your situation changes
If you’re getting NZ Superannuation or the Veteran's Pension, you must let Work and Income know of changes to personal information such as your address, your relationship or your living arrangements.
If you travel overseas
If you're away from NZ for 26 weeks or less you still receive your NZ Superannuation or Veteran's Pension. If you're away for more than 26 weeks you can sometimes get all or part of your pension.
Moving overseas if you get NZ Super or Veteran's Pension
If you decide to move overseas you may be able to keep getting some or all of your NZ Superannuation or Veteran's Pension.
ACC weekly compensation after you turn 65
If you get weekly compensation payments from the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) because you can’t work, this may affect when you get NZ Superannuation.
SuperGold Cards
Who can get a card If you get NZ Superannuation or a Veteran's Pension, you'll get a SuperGold Card. Use it to get business discounts, free or discounted council services, and free off-peak travel on public transport.
